Key Points
Chapter 2 "Organizing Living
Things"
Lesson
1 "Living Things Are Made of Cells"
Key Vocabulary Terms
- Property
- a quality that describes an object
- Organism
- Aliving thing that can carry out all the basic life activities
Key
Concepts
- Most
things in the world are divided into one of two categories, living and nonliving.
- Be able to give examples
of nonliving things such as rocks, clouds, plastic, gasoline, cars, computers.
- Be able to give examples
of living things such as plants, animals, and bacteria.
- Properties of living
things include movement, growth, reproduction, food use and removal of waste,
sensing and reacting to the environment and living things are made of cells.
Did
you learn these Objectives?
- Can
you classify things as living or nonliving?
- Can you explain how
living things are different from nonliving things?
Investigation
2 "Living or Nonliving" (Optional, must complete 10 total investigations)
Key
Concepts
- You
will use these thinking skills: observing, describing, classifying, comparing
and contrasting, and drawing conclusions to determine if items should be
placed in the category of living or nonliving.
Lesson
2 "Comparing Plant and Animal cells"
Key Vocabulary Terms
- Kingdom
- one of the five groups into which living things are classified.
- Biology - the study
of living things
- Taxonomy - the science
of classifying organisms based on the features they share.
- Microorganism - an
organism that is too small to be seen without a microscope.
- Protist - An organism
that usually is one-celled and has plant-like or animal-like prperties.
- Algae - protists that
make their own food and usually live in water.
- Protozoan - a protist
that has animal-like qualities.
- Flagellum - A whip-like
tail that helps some one-celled organisms move (plural is flagella)
- Cilia - hair-like
structures that help some one-celled organisms move.
- Pseudopod - part of
some one-celled organisms that sticks out like a foot to move the cell along.
- Amoeba - a protozoan
that moves by pushing out parts of its cell.
- Fungus - an organism that usually has many cells and decomposes material
for its food (plural is fungi)
- Decompose - to break down or decay matter into simpler substances.
- Parasite - an organism that absorbs food from a living organism and harms
it.
- Moneran - an organism, usually one-celled, that does not have organelles.
Key
Concepts
- The
five kingdoms of living things are animals, plants, protists, fungi, and
monerans.
- Plants are different
from animals because they make their own food and do not move from place
to place.
- Some protist are similar
to plants because make their own food.
- Some protist are similar
to animals because they absorb food from other sources and move about.
- Fungi decompose, or
breakdown, dead plant and animal matter into a form that can be used by
plants.
- Bacteria lack organelles
in their cells; all other organisms have organelles.
Did
you learn these Objectives?
- Are
you able to explain how living things are divided into kingdoms?
- Can you list and describe
the five kingdoms of living things?
