Materials:

Objective:

Alaska Standards:

Anticipatory Set:

The teacher will define the word property. (A quality that describes an object) The teacher will show a wolf skull, students will discuss the properites of the skull. The teacher will show a book, students will discuss the properties of the book. The teacher will show a toad, students will discuss the properties of the toad. Teacher Input: The teacher will point out that nonliving matter may have cells if that matter was once alive. Students will talk about the terms of science study. (Biology = Bio "life" + "ology" the study of.

Students will complete the following table with some things left off:

Anatomy The study of the physical structure of humans and other animals
Botany The study of the structure and function of plants
Cytology The study of the structure and function of cells.
Ecology The study of the relationships amoung organisms and their environments.
Genetics The study of heredity
Immunology The study of the body's defenses against disease and foreign substances.

Teacher Modeling:

Students will relist the properties of a living thing. Students will then recall that some nonliving things possess properties of living things however they do not possess them all. Students will then complete "Classifying Information".

Guided Practice:

Students will work with the insturctor and the five kingdoms of living things worksheet and list 5 organisms that come under each kindom. (May have to research) The red box on P27 will give some insight to those students having trouble with monera.

Closure:

Students will take a quiz over lesson 2-1, "Living and Nonliving Things"

Independent Practice:

Students will receive some old magazines or newspapers. Students will follow the directions to Investigation 2 to identify objects as living or nonliving. Complete lab worksheet and quiz on-line

Duration:

30 minutes + 10-15 for Independent Practice (Could be longer if taken for homework).
