Chapter 2 Introduction
Materials:
Objective:
Alaska Standards:
Anticipatory Set:
The students will be given nine pictures of living organism and in a classroom discussion place the nine figures in the proper Kingdom. Students will define the word kingdom, biology, and taxonomy.
Teacher Input: The students will be introduced to microscopic organisms found in the mud in the bottom of a river. Most of the organisms are insect larva and zooplankton. There may be a few protists. As the little organisms are shown have the students try to identify which kingdom they belong. Students will define microorganism, protist, algae, protozoan, flagellum, cilia, Pseudopod, amoeba.
Teacher Modeling:
Students will be shown several examples of fungus and define fungus, decompose, parasite. Students will discuss how to further classify the fungus. Mention the Science Myth on P 34,
Check for Understanding:
Students will be shown an example of algae. Biologists classify most algae as plants, however they are much simpler than plants and have more in common with protists. The great thing about science is that there is no absolute. Scientists have to be prepared to make a decision an then back their decision with facts.
Guided Practice:
Students will discuss why bacteria are unlike all other life. Define Moneran. Many people know that bacteria are harmful. Are there any good things that come from bacteria? (cheese, yogurt, digestion)
Closure:
Students will look at many different pictures of phylum arthropoda and tell their differences and similarities.
Independent Practice:
Students will use the website at http://anthro.palomar.edu/animal/default.htm to further learn about taxonomy.
Duration:
30 minutes + 10-15 for Independent Practice (Could be longer if taken for homework).
