Chapter 3 Introduction

Anticipatory Set:

Students will use this anticipatory set to finish Thursday's game.

The teacher will log onto http://www.hhmi.org/coolscience/critters/ and demonstrate how animals are classified. Given several sets of four pictures students will match a fifth picture with the other animal with the closes classification. Students from the different sites will take turns matching the animals. Students will then tell the teacher what the two animals have in common.

Teacher Input:

Students will learn the history of classification at http://www.factmonster.com/ipka/A0776195.html The teacher will introduce the information to the students from that page during a question and answer setting.

Teacher Modeling:

Students will begin learning how to recognize organism's characteristics. The teacher will work through the Classifying Animals sheet with the students.

Check for Understanding:

Students will work through the back of that sheet, Mammal Classification, on their own while the teacher checks their progress. Students will lead the teacher through the completion of that sheet.

Guided Practice:

Students will look at the Venn diagram to diferentiate between insect and spider characteristics. The teacher will show how to do the first one or two and the students will complet the characteristics.

Closure:

Students are to find three different types of animals to classify then complete the Vertebrates and Invertebraes in Your Life sheet.
