Chapter 3 Investigation
Materials:
- An assortment of objects(20-30) found in a classroom. (Safety Alert, avoid
items such as pins, lassware, or sharp objects.)
Objective:
- Students will use the processes of observing, listing, classifying, and
identifying similarities and differences to organize classroom objects.
Alaska Standards:
- SCI A-12 Students will distinguish the patterns of similarity and differences
in the living world in order to understand the diversity of life and understand
the theories that describe the importance of diversity for species and ecosystems.
- SCI A-15 Students will use science to understand and describe the local
environment.
- SCI B-1 Students will use the processes of science: classifying.
Anticipatory Set:
- The instructor will show a variety of classroom items and demonstrate how
to complete the classroom lab activity.
Independent Practice:
- Students will be divided into groups of three or four.
- Students will be given their own set of classroom objects to use for the
investigation.
- Students will complete the lab by following the procedure on P 49 of their
textbook.
Check for Understanding:
- Students will use the on-line quiz to answer the questions on P 50.
Closure:
- When students finish they may work with other groups to combine their classification
system in to one perfect system.
Duration:
30 minutes + 10-15 for answering quiz questions(Could be longer if taken for
homework).
