Biology Lab Safety
Objective:
Standards: (B2) A student should design and conduct scientific investigations using appropriate instruments; (B6) A student should employ strict adherence to safety procedures in conducting scientific investigations.
Anticipatory Set: Students will be e-mailed a photo. The photo will contain several unsafe lab practices. Students will identify as many unsafe items as they can at least 10. Click here for picture
Teacher Input: The teacher will go through the one page list of safety issues to follow in a biology lab. http://yksd.com/distanceedcourses/YKSDbiology/labs/labsafety.html
Teacher Modeling: The teacher will then use several items in the classroom both safely and unsafely. The students will identify which way is safe and which is not.
Check for Understanding: Students will demonstrate understanding while the teacher is modeling safety procedures.
Guided Practice: Students will take turns explaining things around the school that are safe and unsafe. Students will also recall inncidents in the school were someone was hurt because rules or safety procedures were not followed. Students will redevelop the list introduced to them at the begining of the lesson and add items that were left off.
Closure: Students will take the quiz on Biology lab safety
(15 minutes before or after the lesson) Independent Practice: Students will use markers, colored pencils, pencils, or paints to sketch a picture of an unsafe biology lab. The picture should have at least five things that are unsafe. Remind the students that the pictures will be hung up and/or passed around. (Best pictures will be posted on the web)
