Chapter 13 Lesson 2, "Learned Behavior"
Materials:
Objective:
Anticipatory Set:* Show the students a clip from a movie showing an animal doing some incredible things. Discuss how the animal has learned the "tricks" it is performing.
Teacher Input:* Students will write down a list of the five types of animal learning; "Imprinting, Observational Learning, Trial-and-error Learning, Conditioning, and insight. During the course of the lesson, students will write down the name of a Fairytale or cartoon in which the animals learn by that type of learning. Show the students a picture of each and explain it. After the short explanation of each have the students identify a fairytale or cartoon in which that type of learning was evident. Here are the pictures: Imprinting 1, 2, 3 (The ugly duckling, Baby Loony Toons), Observational Learning 1, 2 (Fox and the Hound), Trial-and-error Learning 1, 2,(three little pigs, humpty dumpty) Conditioning 1, 2, (Guilligan's Island) and insight 1, (Ice Age"Chipmunk", The Incredible's)
Guided Practice:* Tell the life cycle of the salmon. Ask what type of learning is it that brings the salmon back to the stream in which they were born? (Imprinting). A boy practicing free throws is learning by what? (trial and error). While sitting in your chair learning about learning is what type of learning? (Observational), A boy that uses his toy bus as a stepping stool to shut off the light is using what type of learning? (insight) A bird that says, "Want a pretzel" to get a pretzel is doing what? (Conditioning)
Independent Practice:* Students will work on the "Learned Behavior sheet and then

30 minutes + 10-15 for Independent Practice (Could be longer if taken for homework).
