Chapter 13 Lesson 3, "How Animals Communicate"
Materials:
Objective:
Anticipatory Set:* The teacher will use a foreign language to explain a game. While explaining the game the students will try to figure out what is going on. After the game the students will then discuss what things they understood and how they were able to understand it without understanding a word.
Teacher Input:* P341-344. Students will look at five pictures and state whether they thing that two organisms are communicating in the picture. Communication 1, Communication 2, Communication 3, Communication 4, Communication 5, Communication 6. Discuss different ways of communicating and define the word channel.
Go through chemical signals with these pictures. Chemical 1, Chemical 2. Discuss how humans remove there chemical signals then buy different ones and put them on. Chemical 3.
Discuss Visual signals using the honeybee example and the lightning example from the book. Honeybee1, Honeybee2, Honeybee3, Firefly 1, firefly 2.
Last discuss the Human Language, ask, "How many different languages do humans speak?" (over 3000) Show the students a world map of languages and discuss what languages are spoken where. (world languages)
Guided Practice:* Go through the questions on Page 345 with the students. Complete the worksheet "How Animals Communicate"
Independent Practice:* Complete the worksheet "Vocabulary Review
Check for Understanding:* Students will take the quiz over Lesson 3, "How Animals Communicate"
Duration:
30 minutes + 10-15 for Independent Practice (Could be longer if taken for homework).
