It is the only kingdom that includes organisms that make their own food like plants; that consume food, like animals; and that absorb food, like fungi. The kingdom has both single celled organisms and multicellular organisms. The single celled protists are different from bacteria because they have organelles inside their cells.

Teacher Input: Teacher will work with the students on the first part of the Protozoan Review Sheet. Together all students will research and discuss what the Protists have in common with all the other kindoms.

Teacher Modeling: The teacher will discuss the characteristics of Algae. While looking at a picture either on Page 90 or this one. Topic of discussion are:

Check for Understanding:

Have students complete the bottom of the worksheet first couple questions on Algae.

Guided Practice: The teacher will discuss the characteristics of protozoans. Start by looking at a picture of an amoeba and discuss:

Have the students list the four different types of movement and then tell some key points about each type.Students will fill in the red type spots:

Type of Movement Use a pseudopod Use Hairlike cillia Use Flagella to push or pull themselves around. No means of movement as adults
Characteristics of this type:

  • Live mainly in ponds
  • ingest food through an opening
  • Can be parasitic and live in animal intestines.
  • Can cause other diseases such as sleeping sickness.
  • reproduce by forming spores
  • all sporzoans are parasites
Names of members of this type. Amoebas Paramecium typanosomes plasmodium, anopheles.

Closure: The questions on Page 94 will be divided among the students and each group of students will have to come up with the answer for the questions.
