Chapter 8 Lesson 2 "How Materials Move to and from Cells"

Anticipatory Set: Have each student locate their pulse. They can find it on the thumb side of their wrist or on the side of the neck just below the jaw. The students should then answer the question, What causes the bulging movement. Students will look at this picture of the heart, the main organ of the circulatory system. Tell students where the heart muscle gets its oxygen and food needs. They do not come from in the heart. Tell students that it is these arteries that cause heart attacks. Students will then trace the path of blood through the heart and the body. Use this cut-away diagram from P174. Students should use the worksheet with their notes to define cardiac, and Aorta.
Teacher Input: Students will read the Did You Know on P 175. Teacher will use this diagram to explain how blood travels around the body. Next the teacher will discuss capillaries and food and gas exchange. Teacher and students will define artery, capillary, vein.
Teacher will discuss blood pressure. What causes blood pressure? Then define blood pressure.
Teacher will discuss the blood and the parts of the blood using this diagram. Define plasma, Antibody, Hemoglobin, and Platelet.
Teacher will discuss Blood Types and that they are caused by different proteins in the red blood cells. There are four different types of blood. What happens if a person recieves the wrong blood.

Students will whatch the ADAM presentation on the circulatroy system.

Students will coplete the croosword puzzle on the circulatory system.
Independent Practice: Students will complete the lesson notes and take the quiz on Chapter 8 lesson 2
