Chapter 9 Introduction "Reproduction, Growth, and Development"

Anticipatory Set: Direct student's to the picture on Page 208. Begin a discussion about the picture starting with, "What is it? How do you know? How big is it? How fast does it grow?" Give the students these facts. The fertilized egg starts out at .14mm. An average baby is 30cm, (300mm) long. If the gestation period for a human is 40 weeks how much does the baby grow each week on average?
Teacher Input: Go through the Organize your thoughts chart on P209 to introduce the chapter. Then go through the goals on the bottom of P209.
Guided Practice: Students will research to find answers to questions that will come up in this chapter. They should use the scavenger hunt sheet and they will need resource materials or the Internet.
When students complete the scavenger hunt they should look through old magazines and find pictures that have to do with organisms and their offspring or the development of an organism. Post the pictures on a bulletin board for later use. We will label the pictures later with a term or concept from this chapter (9).

30 minutes + 10-15 for Independent Practice (Could be longer if taken for homework).
