Chapter 10 Lesson 3, "Healthy Habits"

Materials:

Objective:

Anticipatory Set: * Students will take a piece of scratch paper divide it into two columns. The first column will list things that are stressful. The second column will list ways to deal with stress. Students will work on a master list with the teacher.

Show a picture of the US Department of Health and Human Services. Ask how many students exercised yesterday at least 30 minutes, that means your heart beat much faster than normal. Discuss how they feel about regular exercise using these concepts:

Generous today: Tell the students will develop a list the one with the most items on the list will get the points you will have two minutes: The list will be of as many exercise activities that they can in two minutes; Ready Set Go!. Students will exchange papers to count another students anything illegible does not count. Teachers will verify the counts and the student with the most items in there list will receive 5 EXTRA Points, The one with the most in the class will get 10 points!

Discuss the items on the list. Then together as a class students will develop a list of benefits from exercise:

Teacher Input: * Go through the definition of a habit and then discuss how bad habits can become harmful and how good habits can become healthful.

OK, now the tough subject. Everyone in here knows a drug user. Someone who can't stop using a drug whether it is cocaine, alcohol, marijuana, or something else. Picture that person in your mind. Now think of someone in your community who is a leader, loves to exercise, and get out in the outdoors. Have them picture those two people in there mind side by side. Which one is smiling and happy? Drug abuse is a problem that takes happy people and turns them into depressed needy people. Do you want to use drugs?

Guided Practice: * Show the students four questions. While reading the section tonight students should find the answers to 3 of the 5 questions. Here are the questions: (can be found on P259)

What is a habit?

What are the two main reasons people become overweight?

How much exercise do experts recommend?

Why is avoiding drug abuse important?

List some ways to cope with stress.

 

Independent Practice: * Students will complete the investigation worksheet and read the section10-3.

Anticipatory Set: * (Day 2) The teacher will talk about how important attitude is on health. Then to prove the point the teacher will begin chuckling, laughing and then go into an incredibly long laughter section. Then pose the question. Is attitude contagious? (how many students began smiling, chuckling, or laughing. Did it make you feel healthier? Can you trick your body into being a little happier and healthier than you are? Do the people you hang around affect your attitude, emotions, and health?

Being able to recognize positive feelings in the body is important because those feelings can be controlled somewhat? Stress is one of those things that we talked about yesterday. Lets see if we can control our stress and relax a little. Have the teachers turn off the lights and let the students what and watch the itunes window for a couple minutes. Have the students ask themselves what they have in there life that is causing them stress. Then have them ask themselves how they can help themselves deal with it a little better. Have them think of the perfect life for themselves when they are 30.

Guided Practice: * Have a volunteer read the Science Myth on Page 259. Then have a volunteer read the facts that follow. Explain the process and outcomes of exercise. P259.

Check for Understanding: * Have the students complete the Vocabulary Review sheet and the quiz for Chapter 10, section 3.

 

Duration:

(2 days) 30 minutes + 10-15 for Independent Practice (Could be longer if taken for homework).
