Earth Science Key Points
Chapter 2 "Describing the Earth"
Lesson 1 "The Earth's Features"
Key Vocabulary Terms
- continent - one of the seven
major land areas of the earth.
- rotation - spinning of the
earth
- axis - imaginary line through
the earth that connects the North and South Poles
- north pole - point farthest
north on the earth
- south pole - point farthest
south on the earth
Key Concepts
- The earth's shape is rounded,
but not perfectly round.
- The seven continents are Asia,
Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia.
- The four major oceans are
Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic.
- The earth rotates from west
to east.
Did you learn these Objectives?
- Can you describe the earth's
shape?
- Did you locate the seven continents?
- Are you able to name the four
major oceans?
- Can you explain rotation.
Lesson 2 "The Earth's
Rotation and Time"
Key Vocabulary Terms
- standard time zone - area
that has the same clock time
- international date line -
imaginary line that defines the start of a day
Key Concepts
- Use the map on page 34 to
determine what time zone you are in. Alaska is in the Alaska time zone.
- If it is 10:00 AM in Tulsa,
it is 7:00 AM in Juneau.
- If it is noon in New York,
it is 11:00 AM in Monterrey.
- If it is 11:00 PM in Sacramento,
it is 9:00 PM in Honolulu.
- You would have to move your
watch backward if you were traveling from Toronto to Eugene.
Did you learn these Objectives?
- Can you explain what causes
day and night?
- Are you able to describe the
standard time zones?
Investigation
2-1 "Modeling the Earth's Rotation" (Optional, must complete 16
total investigations)
Key Concepts
- You will further learn the
causes of day and night by creating a model that shows the earth's rotation.
Lesson
3 "A Grid System on a Map"
Key Vocabulary Terms
- grid - set of horizontal and
vertical lines on a map
Key Concepts (Answers to Review on P39)
- On the map on page 38 highway
55 is located in column 5 although others also pass through the column.
- On the map on page 38 Central
is located in block A2.
- On the map on page 38 Highway
80 crosses Highway 55 in block A5.
- On the map on page 38 block
B5 contains 2 parks.
- On the map on page 38 Goose
Lake Prairie State Park is located in block C4.
Did you learn these Objectives?
- Are you able to explain what
a block grid is?
- Can you use a block grid to
locate a point on a map?
Investigation
2-2"Describing Location on a Round Surface" (Optional, must complete
16 total investigations)
Key Concepts
- You will begin to understand
how latitude and longitude work to find a location on the earth by investigating
your own way to describe a location on a round surface.
Lesson
4 "Latitude"
Key Vocabulary Terms
- latitude - angle that describes
the distance north and south of the equator.
- equator - line of 0 degrees
latitude halfway between the poles.
- parallel - line of latitude.
- degree - unit for measuring
angles in a circle or sphere.
Key Concepts (Answers to Review on P45)
- The latitude of the equator
is 0 degrees.
- The latitude of the South
Pole is 90 degrees.
- South America and Africa extend
both north and south of 0 degrees latitude.
- The latitude of the northern
tip of South America is about 12 degrees north.
- The latitude of YKSD is about
62 degrees north.
Did you learn these Objectives?
- Can you explain what a global
grid is?
- Are you able to define latitude?
- Can you estimate a point's
latitude?
Lesson
5 "Longitude"
Key Vocabulary Terms
- longitude - angle that describes
the distance east or west of the prime meridian.
- meridian - line of longitude
- prime meridian - line of 0
degrees longitude.
Key Concepts (Answers to Review on P47)
- The longitude of the prime
meridian is 0 degrees.
- The highest numbered meridian
is 180 degrees.
- The eastern edge of South
America is about 35 degrees west.
- YKSD is about 150-160 degrees
west.
- Both latitude and longitude
lines are part of the global grid and are imaginary lines encircling the
earth. Latitude lines are parallel lines that circle the globe from east
and west, while longitude lines are lines that meet at the poles, run north
and south , and are not parallel.
Did you learn these Objectives?
- Can you define longitude?
- Are you able to estimate a
point's longitude using the map on page 46.
Lesson
6 "A Grid System on a Globe"
Key Vocabulary Terms
- hemisphere - half of the
earth
Key Concepts (Answers to review questions on page 50)
- The city located at 30 N,
90 W is New Orleans.
- The city located at 40 N,
76W is Philadelphia.
- The city located at 39N, 105
W is Denver.
- The latitude and Longitude
of Helena is 47N, 113 W.
- The latitude and Longitude
of Winnipeg is 50N, 97W.
Did you learn these Objectives?
- Are you able to use latitude
and longitude to find a point on the earth?
- Can you explain what hemispheres
are?
