Chapter 1 Lesson 1, "Earth Science"
Materials:
Objective:
Anticipatory Set:* Students will look at the picture form Page 1(xx) again. Students will define geology and then discuss the fields. They will then discuss the interactions among the items in the picture and how one thing in the picture can affect the other things in the picture. Students will define Earth Science and geology. Students will then look at pictures of a geologist, an oceanographer, meteorologist, and an astronomers.
| Geologist | Oceanographer | Meteorologist | Meteorologist2 | Astronomer |
As they look at these pictures they will define each area of study in earth science.
Teacher Input:* Students will look at the Scientific Method. Students will discuss the steps of the scientific method and how they lead the scientist in a circle. Use the Oceanographers as an example. "Hypothesis, this coral reef is shrinking." Follow the steps of the scientific method to see how it might be used by the oceanographers to answer the question. Ask the students whether or not this man is using the scientific method.
Guided Practice:* Students will be asked the question: "What system of measurement do scientists use?" Show this picture and ask how it differs from the common system of measurement we use?" Students will look at several tools used by scientists as they are they will tell what type of scientist might use that tool. Here they are:
Students will answer these questions to help them understand how earth science is important for them. You may use these pictures to help:
Independent Practice:* Students will complete the workbook activity, "Earth Science"
Check for Understanding:* Students will take the quiz over chapter 1 lesson 1, "Earth Science"
Duration:
