Chapter 2 Lesson 3 "A Grid System on a Map"
Materials:
Objective:
Anticipatory Set:* Students will start out looking at a simple grid map. The teacher will explain how to find the location of an object on the map. The the teacher will give an object and have the students tell the objects grid location.Here is the grid map. Where else can you find grid lines? (graph paper, crossword puzzle, checker board. etc.
Teacher Input:* Define Grid. Students will look again at the map of UAF. Point out the grid on this map. How is it useful for someone who doesn't know the university? Remind the students how in the first chapter we gave very lengthy directions to find the Arctic Research center. Now that we know the grid is there. What would be an easier way to give someone directions?
Guided Practice:* Test the students again on the locations of places on the UAF map. This time give the coordinates and have the students name the building you are in.
Independent Practice:* Students will read Page 38 and answer the questions on P39. Students will complete the Worksheet, A grid System on a Map.
Check for Understanding:* Students will take the quiz on lesson 3, "A Grid System on a Map"
Duration:
30 minutes + 10-15 for Independent Practice (Could be longer if taken for homework).
