Chapter 2 Lesson 5 "Longitude"
Materials:
Objective:
Anticipatory Set:* Students will be reminded of the lines of latitude covered in the last lesson. What are the different names of the lines of latitude? If we need a grid system to find a point on the globe, what are the lines that go up and down. Are they parallel to each other? Demonstrate how the lines of longitude are laid out on a sphere using a protractor and drawing it on a piece of paper. There is a special name for the 0 degrees longitude what is it? What do you call an ordinary line of longitude.
Teacher Input:* Show the students this
picture. Explain how the degrees of longitude are laid out. Use this image
to explain the difficulty of drawing a flat
map from a round object. Cartographers have developed a lot of different
ways to deal with the issue.
Use a Venn diagram to compare and
contrast lines of latitude and lines of longitude.
Guided Practice:* Have the students look at these different types of maps and tell one of the advantages of the type of map and one of the disadvantages.
GoodeHomolosineProjection, mercator Projection, MollweideProjection, OrthographicProjection 1, 2, 3, robinsonProjection1, 2.
Independent Practice:* Have the students complete the Longitude Worksheet.
Check for Understanding:* Students should take quiz 2-5 "longitude"
Duration:
30 minutes + 10-15 for Independent Practice (Could be longer if taken for homework).
