Chapter 2 Lesson 6 "A grid System on a Globe"

Objective:

Anticipatory Set:* Tell the students about a time you went hunting and an elder told you to meet him a mile from Last Chance. Is there anything wrong with that description? Did I know where to meet him. Which of these descriptions is the best if you wanted to meet someone?

Meet me at the bank in Koyukuk.

Meet me at the Fred Meyer's in Fairbanks.

Meet me at 66.02.90 degrees N and 154.15.00 degrees W. (Does anyone know where this is?)

The latitude longitude is the school in Hughes.

 

Teacher Input:*Students will begin by looking at this simple grid system and how the location of one of the squares is labeled then they will compare it to the Grid system on a globe. What are the similarities? What are the differences? Given this map of the world can students tell the latitude and longitude of a particular place on the map. next tell the latitude and longitude of a spot on this map and ask the students the name of the state.

Teacher will point out the the equator divides the world into a north half and a south half. What are those halves called? Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere. Is there any other lines used to divide the world in half for the purpose of discussion and study? Eastern Hemisphere, Western Hemisphere.

Guided Practice:* Teacher will go through the questions on Page 50 with the class.

Independent Practice:* Students will complete the worksheets, Using Latitude and Longitude. A grid System on a Globe: Terms Review.

Check for Understanding:* Students will take the quiz on Lesson 6, A Grid System on a Globe.

 

Duration:

30 minutes + 10-15 for Independent Practice (Could be longer if taken for homework).
