Chapter 3 Lesson 4, "The Moon's Surface"

Materials:

Objective:

Anticipatory Set:* Show the students this picture of the moon and mention some of the names. Remind them that just like features on Earth have names such as the Yukon River, Pilot Mountain, three day slough, so does the moon. Here are some of them. Moon's features names.

Teacher Input:* Teacher will list the terms Telescope, Maria, Crater, and Meteorite on the screen. Then have the students define them as we go along.

Ask the students if they have ever tried to see images on the surface of the moon? moon's surfaces. People for thousands of years have tried. Here are some of the ways they see images: moon frog, moon hare, moon man, moon man 2, moon toad. What causes these dark areas on the moon. What are they called. Define moon Maria. Here is a picture of the moon maria, and a map with different names of them.

What are the circles on the face of the moon, What causes them? Define crater and Meteorite.

Ask: How long ago did astronauts walk on the moon. What did they lear from their missions? (the age of the moon, movement of the moons surface, moon quakes, the moon's environment, there were once volcanoes on the moon, and even a little about the sun's history by studying the dust an rocks on the moon.) Here are several pictures of the Apollo missions to the moon. Astro 1, Astro 2, Astro 3, Astro 4, Astro 5.

Guided Practice:* Go through the questions on Page 72 with the students. Point out that it is the end of the chapter and the summary on Page 73.

Independent Practice:* Students will complete the Moon Surface: Terms Review. Then these things are optional. Have the students use a telescope to look at and map the moons features. Some students may also want to complete the Measuring a Crater Size investigation.

Check for Understanding:* Students will complete the quiz on Chapter 3 Lesson 4, the Moon's Surface.

 

Duration:

30 minutes + 10-15 for Independent Practice (Could be longer if taken for homework).
