Chapter 6 Introduction
Materials:
Objective:
Anticipatory Set:* .Show the picture of the introduction on Page 130 of the text. Tell the students that there are several different types of matter in the picture. Have the students name as many things as they can. Do the same thing with the picture of this power plant. Each site will then spend 3 minutes developing a definition of matter together without looking at the definition in the book. We will then compare each definition that students come up with.
Teacher Input:* Students will review how this chapter is organized by using the Organize your thoughts diagram on Page 131. The goals for this chapter will then be looked at. Have the student tell themselves in there head which they already know and is there a question they may have about one of the goals. Have the students write a question on a piece of scrap paper and put it in the book as a bookmark for what page they are on. At the end of the chapter we will see if the question was answered.
Guided Practice:* Students will find pictures of things in the three states of matter either on the Internet or in old magazines. Students will then prepare a poster representing the three states of Matter. Also for each object the student will identify all the properties they can think of for that type of matter. This card will get developed over the course of the chapter. Students should just list the items name and solid, liquid, or gas to begin with unless they are familiar with other properties. Demonstrate how to find a picture of an object on the Internet and print it.
Independent Practice:* Students will complete the worksheet, Community Connection, Using States of Matter. In class worksheets will factor in as 40% of there overall grade after they quizzes, investigation, and tests are graded.
Check for Understanding:* This will be checked at the end of the chapter when we review the cards.
