Objective:
Anticipatory Set:* Have the students look at the pictures on the bottom of page 170-171. While looking at the pictures have them write a letter to the President explaining how important recycling programs are and what minerals are used for. (Students will have 5 minutes)
Teacher Input:*Of the 2000 known minerals only about 12 make up most of the Earth's crust. Quartz, feldspar, olivine, pyroxene, amphibole, and mica are common silicate minerals in the crust. Show the students several pictures of minerals used in everyday living. Go through 3 pictures of where minerals are used in the home. Have the students guess what minerals are found in each of the items shown in the picture.
