Chapter 8 Introduction

Materials:

Objective:

Anticipatory Set:* The students will be shown the picture on Page 176. Students will pretend that they are describing the picture to a blind man. Have them write a paragraph description of the picture for the blind man. One person at each site will get a chance to read their description to the rest of the sites.

Teacher Input:* Rocks are thousands of years old and are, believe it or not, constantly changing. Show the students the slide of Organize Your Thoughts from Page 177. Explain the organization and a brief veiw of each type of rock. Igneous, Sedimentary, Metamorphic.

Go through the Goals for Learning for Chapter 8.

Guided Practice:* Display the rocks from the mineral and energy kit. These are the upper numbers. Use the key that was in the sample kit to remove only the rocks and not the minerals. Have the students take turns coming to the front of the room and try to group the rocks based on similarities and differences. Have them explane their reasoning to the rest of the class.

Independent Practice:* Students will complete the worksheet "Rocks All Around." Students will have the option to use Internet resources to help them with ones they can't get in the village setting. Here are some examples you may help them with:

igneous rock: pumice stone for scrubbing in the shower, granite for monuments, gems for jewlery, granite for counter tops and sinks,

Metamorphic Rock:slate, chalk boards; marble, tile, counters; quartzite in glass;

Sandstone: chalk for writing on the chalkboard, crude oil, coal, gypsum wall board;

Duration:

30 minutes + 10-15 for Independent Practice (Could be longer if taken for homework).
