Chapter 8 Lesson 3 "Sedimentary Rocks"

Materials:

Objective:

Anticipatory Set:* Show the students a demonstration of how sedimentary rock is layed down. Add some water, sand, clay, small rocks, gravel, and have the students draw a diagram of what the jar will look if it is shaken and left to sit for 20 minutes.

Teacher Input:* Use this series of photographs to explain how sedimiment is created, transported, deposited and cemented together into sedimentary rock. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11.

There are three types of sedimentary rocks the one that we just covered in those diagrams is a clastic sedimentary rock.

The next type is a chemical sedimentary rock. Show three types of chemical rock. 1, 2, 3.

Next is Organic rock, show three types of organic rock.1, 2, 3.

Show the students a series of pictures and have them idenify the rock as clastic, chemical, or Organic.

Guided Practice:* Go through the questions on Page 189 with the students.

Independent Practice:* Students will complete the crossword puzzle on Sedimentary Rocks.

Check for Understanding:* Students will complete the quiz on Lesson 3 Sedimentary Rocks.

 

Duration:

30 minutes + 10-15 for Independent Practice (Could be longer if taken for homework).
