Read the Introduction to Unit 3 on pages 84-85. Remember that Tall Tales and Legends tell a lot about the culture that created them.
Look at the objectives in the margin of page 86, this is what you will strive to learn this unit.

tall tale - a story from the past that features larger-than-life characters who have unreal adventures.
folklore - stories tad customs that are saved and passed along by people in an area or group.
exaggeration - in literature, making something seem more than it is; stretching the truth.
humor - writing intended to amuse.
dialect - the speech of a particular part of a country, or of a certain group of people.

Vocabulary:
excerpt - a short passage from a longer piece of writing.

characterization - the way a writer develops character's qualities and personality traits.
exposure - how something is placed so it is not sheltered from weather.

Lesson 4 Questions to think about/ Vocabulary.
legend - a story from folklore that features characters who actually lived, or real events or places.
ballad - a form of poetry that tells a story, passed from person to person, often as a simple song or rhyming words and a refrain.
stanza - group of lines that forms a unit in a poem.
refrain - repeated line in a poem or song that creates mood or gives importance to something.
