Look at the picture on Page 140, What do you think the picture has to do with Short Stories? (self thinking question)
On Page 141 Read the short introduction to The Short Story.
Read the Introduction to Unit 4 on pages 142-143. Remember that short stories are very brief fictional works dreamed up by the author.
Look at the objectives in the margin of page 144, this is what you will strive to learn the first section of the unit.
Look at the white boxes in the margins of Pages 144-145 these are key vocabulary that you will need to know. Jot them down in your notes.

Vocabulary Terms
Plot - the series of events in a story.
Setting - a story's time and place.
Character - a person or animal in a story.
Point of view - the relationship of the narrator to the story.
Theme - the main idea of a story.
pen name- a false name used for writing.
novel - fiction that is book-length and has more plot and details than a short story.
short story - a brief work of prose fiction that includes plot, setting characters, point of view, and theme.
fiction - writing in which the author creates the events and characters.
story-within-a-story - a second story told within another story.
humorist - someone who writes funny works.
caricature - a character description that is exaggerated - overstated- to make people laugh.
prose - all writing that is not poetry.
dialogue - the conversation among characters in a story or play.

conflict - the struggle of the main character against himself or herself, another person, or nature.
protagonist - the main character; also called the hero
antagonist - the person or thing in the story struggling against the main character.
rising action - the events of the plot that add to the conflict.
