Lesson 1 "Poetry, Introduction"

Look at the picture on Page 376, What do you think the picture has to do with poetry? (self thinking question)

On Page 377 Read the short introduction to poetry.

Read the Introduction to Unit 7 on pages 378-379. Remember that poetry is unlike other forms of writing for many reasons. People have been trying to figure out what makes poetry, "poetry" for many years.

Examine the tools that Use the Meaning of words on Pages 380-381. Be prepared to identify them from examples given in the quiz.

Look at the objectives in the margin of page 382, this is what you will strive to learn about ballads.

Lesson 1 Key Vocabulary

Vocabulary Terms

ballad - a form of poetry that tells a story, passed from person to person, often as a simple song with rhyming words and a refrain.

poetry - literature in verse form that usually has rhyme and paints powerful or beautiful impressions with words.

rhythm - a pattern created by the stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry

rhyme words that end with the same sounds.

repetition - using a word, phrase, or image more than once, for emphasis

refrain - repeated line in a poem or song that creates a mood or gives importance to something.

stanza - a group of lines that forms a unit in a poem.

figurative language - language that uses word pictures to compare or describe, and that is not meant to be taken as the truth.

metaphor - a figure of speech that says one thing is another.

tanka - a form of Japanese poetry having fie lines with five syllables in the first, seven in the second, five in the third, and seven in the fourth and fifth.

haiku - a form of Japanese poetry having three lines with five syllables in the first, seven in the second, and five in the third.
