Lesson 1 "Dram Introduction and William Shakespere"

Look at the picture on Page 434, What do you think the picture has to do with Drama? (self thinking question)

On Page 435 Read the short introduction to Drama.

Read the Introduction to Unit 8 on pages 436-437. Drama is meant to be performed as well as read.

Look at the objectives in the margin of page 438, this is what you will strive to learn the first section of the unit.

Look at the white boxes in the margins of Pages 439-440 these are key vocabulary that you will need to know. Jot them down in your notes.

Lesson 1 Key Vocabulary

Vocabulary Terms

drama - a story told through the words and actions of characters, written to be performed as well as read; a play.

tragedy - a play that ends with the suffering or death of one or more of the main characters.

act - a major unit of action in a play.

climax - the high point of interest or suspense in a story or play

dialogue - the conversatin amoung characters in a story or play

monologue - a speech by one person

foreshadowing - clues or hints that a writer gives about something that has not yet happened

dreamatic irony - when the audience or reader knows more than the characters know.

scene - a unit of action in a play that takes place in one setting.

Prepare to read "Romeo and Juliet ", read the text in the small boxes in the margins on Pages 442-461.

Look at the pictures on Pages 442-461 try to start forming an idea about what the story is going to be about.

Prepare for the selection by becoming familiar with the vocabulary at the bottom of pages 442-461(tan boxes).
