  2. During the second stage of the family cycle, parents must meet the needs of themselves.
  3. Your answer may vary. Some characteristics of a healthy marriage may include: having common goals, accepting and supporting each other, sharing household tasks, agreeing on money matters, having similar interests.
  4. The first stage in the family life cycle begins when two people marry. They share duties of the family. Stage two begins when a child is born into the family and the couple has parental responsibilities. Stage three is when the children become teenagers and begin preparing for living independent lives. The fourth stage is when children leave home and begin their own lives. In the fifth and final stage, a couple must learn to accept growing limitations and disabilities.
  5. Older family members contribute to the family by sharing wisdom, knowledge, and family history.

Vocabulary Terms

Depressed - extremely sad

Divorce - the end of a marriage

Separation - a period when a married couple stops living together.

Violent - doing actions or words that hurt people.

Child abuse - an action that harms a child.

Emotional abuse - a mistreatment through words, gestures, or lack of affection.

Sexual abuse - any sexual contact that is forced on a person.

  1. Some events that cause stress in families are the birth of a child, relocation of an older family member; loss of job; illness, injury, or death of a family member.
  2. Most communities have support groups to help families deal with problems. Caring adults or friends are good sources of support. Professional counselors, social workers, and psychologists can also help the family.
