Vocabulary Terms

Absorption - the moving of nutrients from the digestive system to the circulatory system

Digestion - the breaking down of food into nutrients

Metabolism- The process of cells using nutrients for energy and other needs

Nutrient - the basic unit of food that the body can use.

  1. The three steps of using food for energy are digestion, absorption and metabolism.
  2. During metabolism, nutrients are taken into the cells and are changed in a way that allows the cells to use them for energy and other needs.

Lesson 2 Key Points

Vocabulary Terms

Carbohydrate - a nutrient needed mostly for energy

Protein - a nutrient needed for growth and repair of body tissues

fiber - the parts of food that the body cannot digest.

amino acid - the smaller units of protein

Complete protein - a protein that has all nine essential amino acids.

 

Section Review Answers

  1. Simple carbohydrates are sometimes called "empty calories" because they contain sugars and calories but few other nutrients. Complex carbohydrates (found in fruits, vegetables and grains) contain both nutrients and fiber.
  2. You may have said fruits, vegetables and grains.
  3. You may have said meats, poultry fish, cheese, eggs, milk, and milk products, nuts, peas, and beans.
  4. A protein that has all nine amino acids the body cannot make is a complete protein. You can get complete proteins by eating foods that contain the nine amino acids, such as meat, chicken, fish, eggs, milk, and milk products.

Cholesterol - a waxy fat-like substance found in animal products

Polyunsaturated fat - a fat that is found mostly in plant foods

Saturated fat - a fat that is found mostly in animal products.
