Vocabulary Terms

Acquired disease - a disease caused by infection or human behavior.

disease - a disorder of normal body function

Gene - parts of a cell that are passed from parent to child

Inherited disease - a disease passed through genes

Muscular dystrophy - an inherited disease in which the muscles do not develop normally

Pathogen - a disease-causing germ.

Infection - a sickness caused by a pathogen in the body.

Infectious disease caused by a pathogen

Mucous membrane - the thin, moist tissue that lines body openings

Mucus - the sticky fluid produced by mucous membranes.

Multiply - increase in number.

  1. Any inherited disease in a disease caused by genes that are passed from parent to child.
  2. An acquired disease is a disease caused by infection or human behavior.
  3. Pathogens multiply when they enter your body.
  4. Mucous membranes make mucus, which traps pathogens before they enter the body. Hairs in the nose trap pathogens. Acid in the stomach kills pathogens. Coughing, sneezing, and vomiting remove pathogens from the body.
  5. Because pathogens are passed from person to person on the hands, washing the hands decreases the number of pathogens on the hands.

Lesson 2 Key Points

Vocabulary Terms

Immune system - a system of organs, tissues, and cells that fight infection.

Inflammatory response - the body's first response to a pathogen.

Immune - resistant to infection

Immunization - means of making a body immune from a disease

vaccination - an injection of dead or weakened viruses to make the body immune to the virus.

 

Section Review Answers

  1. During the inflammatory response, the area of injury becomes hot and its blood vessels enlarge. This brings many special blood cells to the area to attack the invading pathogens.
  2. The immune response begins when certain cells in the body detect invading pathogens.
  3. Antibodies are made in the blood.
  4. Antibodies to pathogens develop during the course of the illness. Antibodies may also be in the blood as a result of a vaccination.
  5. A vaccination is a harmless form of a pathogen. It causes the body to make antibodies to the pathogen.
