Vocabulary Terms

AIDS- acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, a disorder of the immune system.

HIV - Human immunodeficiency virus, the virus that causes AIDS.

HIV negative - not having HIVC in the blood.

HIV positive - having HIV in the blood.

Kaposi's sarcoma - a rare type of cancer affecting the skin or internal organs.

Communicable - Able to be passed from one person to another.

Transfusion - the transfer of blood from one person to another.

  1. AIDS is a disease of the immune system. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS.

Chronic - lasting

Genital herpes - a sexually transmitted chronic infection.

Sexually transmitted disease - a disease passed from one person to another through sexual contact.

Gonorrhea - a sexually transmitted disease that often has no symptoms.

Penicillin - an antibiotic used to treat diseases such as gonorrhea.

Chlamydia - a sexually transmitted disease that often has no symptoms.

Syphilis - a sexually transmitted disease that has three stages.
