Vocabulary Terms

Prevention - appropriate, ongoing self-care.

Nurse practitioner - a registered nurse with special training for providing health care.

Primary care physician - a doctor who treats people for routine problems.

Health care facility - a place where people go for medical, dental, and other care.

Inpatient - someone receiving health care who stays in a facility overnight or longer.

Outpatient - someone receiving health care without staying overnight.

Pediatrics - Child health care.

Rehabilitation - help to recover from surgery, illness, or injury.

Hospice - a long-term care facility for people who are dying.

Terminally ill - dying from a disease, an injury, or an illness, sometimes over a long period.

Vocabulary Terms

Deductible - the initial amount a patient must pay before insurance covers health care costs.

A plan that pays all or part of medical costs.

Out-of-pocket - straight from a person's income or savings.

Premium - an amount of money paid to an insurance company at regular intervals.

Medicaid - Health insurance for people with low incomes.

Medicare - Health insurance for people age 65 or older or who receive Social Security disability.

Defective - not working properly

Count - the number of items in a package

Quackery - a medical product or service that is unproved or worthless.

Word of mouth - information about a product that you hear from a friend or family member.

Bogus - non genuine

Generic - Non brand-name.
