Lesson 1 Key Points

Vocabulary Terms

Environment - The system that connects, air, land, water, plants, and animals.

Pollution - the buildup of harmful wastes in the air, land, or water.

Ecology - the study of how living things are connected.

 

Section Review Answers

  1. Plants give off oxygen, which animals need to breathe. Animals turn the oxygen into carbon dioxide, which plants need to survive.
  2. Land that has been mined may be so damaged that it can no longer grow trees or crops. It may be unsafe for humans to live on.
  3. Nature can break down normal wastes. Pollution consists of dangerous chemicals that nature cannot clean.
  4. Ecology is the study of how living things are connected.
  5. Nature can usually recover from the results of natural disasters over time. But human activity can disturb the environment in ways from which nature cannot recover.

Vocabulary Terms

By-product - an unwanted result.

Hydrocarbon - a toxin caused by motor vehicle exhaust.

Toxin - a dangerous chemical.

Carbon monoxide - a pollutant caused by car exhaust.

Fossil fuel - a burnable substance formed in the earth from plant or animal material.

smog - air pollution formed by car exhaust and other pollutants.

acid rain - rain, snow, sleet, or hail with large amounts of sulfuric acid or nitric acid.

Asbestos - a material made of fibers that is used as an insulator; it can cause lung cancer.

particulate - a small pollutant, such as dust, ash, or dirt.

radon - a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas that is formed underground.

Greenhouse effect - a gradual warming of the earth's atmosphere.

Ozone layer - a region in the atmosphere that protects the earth from the sun's harmful rays.

Groundwater - Water beneath the earth's surface.

Famine - a shortage of food

Landfill - a place where waste is buried between layers of earth.

  1. Groundwater is the source for most of our drinking water.
  2. The effects of an oil spill last for years because the oil spills are difficult to clean up since the spilled oil sits on top of the water.
  3. You can conserve water in the shower by turning off the shower while you lather and clean and limit your time in the shower to vie minutes.
  4. If a landfill gets too full, some of the trash may be burned. This pollutes the air.
  5. A larger population requires more food, which strains land resources and our ability to feed everyone. A larger population will also need more cars and other products. This can cause the use of more resources and create more pollution.
