Turn to page 35 look at the picture on the facing page. Can you tell what the picture has to do with Understanding Dictionary Entries?

Lesson 1 Key Points
Vocabulary Terms
Dictionary - a book that contains an alphabetical listing of words and their meanings
entry - a listing in a dictionary. An entry provides facts about a word.
Key - a guide to the symbols and abbreviations used in each entry.
syllable - a part of a word with one vowel sound
accent mark - a mark that shows which part of a word to stress when pronouncing the word
stress - to pronounce a syllable with more emphasis than the other syllables in the word.
abbreviation - a shortened form of a written word.

Etymology - the study of the history of a word
Origin - the beginning of something
Derived - comes from (many English words are derived from other languages)
Can you understand and identify the parts of a dictionary entry.

Lesson 3 Key Points
Homonym - a word that sounds exactly like another word but is spelled differently and has a different meaning.
The Baseball Hall of Fame is in Cooperstown, New York. It was dedicated in 1939. People like to visit the museum. The Hall of Fame is called "The shrine of organized baseball." A shrine is a holy place!

Lesson 4 Key Points
Geographical dictionary - A reference book that lists rivers, mountains, cities, and other features.
Biographical dictionary - a reference book that lists famous people and facts about their lives
Antonym - a word that means the opposite of another word.
