Turn to page 35 look at the picture on the facing page. Can you tell what the picture has to do with Understanding Dictionary Entries?

Vocabulary Terms

Dictionary - a book that contains an alphabetical listing of words and their meanings

entry - a listing in a dictionary. An entry provides facts about a word.

Key - a guide to the symbols and abbreviations used in each entry.

syllable - a part of a word with one vowel sound

accent mark - a mark that shows which part of a word to stress when pronouncing the word

stress - to pronounce a syllable with more emphasis than the other syllables in the word.

abbreviation - a shortened form of a written word.

Geographical dictionary - A reference book that lists rivers, mountains, cities, and other features.

Biographical dictionary - a reference book that lists famous people and facts about their lives

Antonym - a word that means the opposite of another word.
