Turn to page107 look at the picture on the facing page. Can you tell what the girl has to do with Using the Telephone?

Read the Introductory paragraph on Page 107.

Vocabulary Terms

Directory - a book that lists in alphabetical order names, addresses, and telephone numbers of people, businesses and government agencies.

White Pages - a part of the telephone book with residential and business listings arranged in alphabetical order.

Resident - A person who lives in a certain place.

Fee - a charge for service.

Alternative - a choice between two or more possibilities.

Yellow Pages - A part of the telephone book with business listings that are organized under subject headings arranged in alphabetical order.

Products - Goods that you can buy

Services - what businesses or individuals can do for you

profession - a job that requires special information and academic training

professional - someone who works at a specific profession

Blue Pages - a part of the telephone book that lists the numbers of government agencies.

Toll-free - a long-distance number that does not require you to pay when you use it. The owner of the number pays.

Toll call - A call for which an extra fee is charged.

Flat fee - a fee for a long-distance call that is not based on how long you have been on the phone.
