Mass media - a way to communicate with the most people at one time; for example, television, radio, newspapers, and magazines.

Broadcast - to send radio or television signals through the air to receivers in the home, the car, or another location.

affiliate - a member station that carries some of the programs broadcast by a large television network.

local - having to do with one certain place.

donation - a gift of money or other items of value

documentary - a nonfiction film or television program.

subscriber - a customer of a local cable television company

syndicate - a company or organization that sells television programs to television stations.

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) - a government agency that provides licenses to people or companies to operate television and radio stations.

Format - the style or type of programming that a radio station offers

Play list - the scheduled list of music that a radio station plays.

multimedia - a combination of television, radio,, newspaper, magazines, and/or the Internet.

Tape-delayed - Program that is not live but is taped and played later.

current - up to the present

national - having to do with a whole country, or nation

column - a regular newspaper feature about recent events, current political and social issues, and other topics of interest to readers.

editorial - an article that gives an opinion about an issue or event in the news. Members of the newspaper staff write editorials.

cartoon - usually a single drawing that the artist uses to tell a joke or express an idea.

obituary - a short article about someone who has recently died.

Death notice - information about a person's death and details about the funeral arrangements

comic strip - a series of cartoon frames that tell a story.

reporter - a person who researches facts and writes stories for a newspaper.

editor - a person who decides which stories will be reported to the public.

lead - the first paragraph of a news story; summarizes the most important facts in the story and answers the questions Who? What? Where? and When?
