Vocabulary Terms
Addition - The arithmetic operation of combining two or more numbers to find a total.
Arithmetic - the study of the properties of numbers using four basic operations- addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Operation - Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Addend - Number to be added to another.
Sum - The result of addition.
Whole number A number such as 0, 1, 2, 3, ...
Algebra - the branch of mathematics that uses both letters and numbers to show relations between quantities

Subtraction - the arithmetic operation of taking one number away from another.
Difference - the result of subtraction
Inverse - exactly opposite
Rename - to give a new form that is equal to the original.

Multiplication - the arithmetic operation that adds a number a given amount of times.
Factor - the numbers in a multiplication statement.
Product - The result of multiplication.

Lesson 5 Key Points
Division - the arithmetic operation of finding how many times a number goes into another number.
Divisor - The number that is used to divide.
Dividend - The number that is divided.
Quotient - the result of division
Remainder - amount left over when dividing.

Open statement - A sentence that is neither true nor false.
Terms - Parts of an expression separated by operation signs such as +, -, *, X, or /.
Expression - A mathematical statement that usually includes numbers, variables, and symbols.

Variable - a letter that represents an unknown number.
Algebraic expression - a mathematical statement that includes at least one operation and variable.
Numerical expression - a mathematical sentence that uses operations and numbers.

Evaluate - to find the numerical value of an algebraic expression.
