Vocabulary Terms

County - a district into which a state is divided for purposes of local government.

County seat - a place where county offices are located.

Zoning - the act of determining where homes and businesses may be built.

Prosecute - to bring legal action against

Coroner - Official who looks into the cause of a person's death.

Urban - Having to do with a city.

Culture - the values, arts, and customs of people in a community

Assessor - a person who sets the value of property.

Sales tax - a fee charged based on the price of an item.

Ward - a section in a city.

Direct democracy - Form of government in which all voters gather to conduct town business.

Trustee - a person who is given power to act for others.
