Comprehension: Understanding Main Ideas:

  1. Constantine called his capital the "new Rome" because he built it as the emperors had built Rome. He had senate. He organized his army along Roman lines. Also, in the early years of the empire, all the Byzantine emperors were Roman and spoke Latin just as the emperors had in Rome.
  2. The Cyrillic alphabet was important to the Slavs because now they could be taught to read and write. Also, Cyril and Methodius translated the Bible and church songs and ceremonies into their written language. This allowed them to read the Bible and understand the words of the songs they sang at their ceremonies. They could also write down their own stories and history.
  3. Some historians call the Middle Ages in Europe the "Dark Ages" because all the tribes were at war, schools closed, knowledge of the past was lost, and no governments existed to repair and build roads and public buildings.
