Rival - one who tries to do better than another; to try to outdo another country or person.

  1. During the nineteenth century, nations began to take over other countries These imperialistic powers did not have equal shares of land and riches so they became rivals. This ultimately led to war.
  2. Imperial nations began a military buildup that made tem become even more aggressive rivals.
  3. When nations formed alliances, individual countries agreed to protect their allies. If one nation declared war against another, many nations would go to war, too.
  4. Serbs living in Austria-Hungary wanted to be part of Serbia, a neighboring country. This nationalism then became a problem that led to war.
  5. The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and his wife was the immediate spark of the war.

Central Powers - allied nations of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, and Bulgaria.

Barbed wire - wire that has sharp metal spikes on it

Trench - a long narrow ditch

U-boat - a German submarine

Convoy - a group of ships that travel together for protection.

Unrestricted warfare - war that is not restricted to a certain area or boundary.

Armistice - an agreement to stop fighting.

  3. The war may have cost $350 billion. This bankrupt all the major European countries. Many governments had raised taxes and borrowed large sums of money to pay for the war. Cities and farms - especially in France and Belgium - lay in ruin. Many people had no jobs. Also, the world markets changed so that the United States and Japan began to take over market that European countries had formerly controlled.
