Lesson 2 Key Points

Vocabulary Terms

appeasement - a policy of making others happy or content; giving in so that others will be happy and will not cause a war.

Conference - a meeting to discuss ideas and plans.

Munich Pact - a 1938 agreement between Great Britain and the Germany to appease Hitler.

Front - the place where armies fight; the battle line

  1. Italy and Germany invaded Ethiopia, Albania, and Rhineland, Austria,Czechoslovakia , and Poland.
  2. The treaty limited the size of Germany's army and its number of weapons. However, Hitler ordered all young German men to sever in the army and all factories to produce guns, tanks, airplanes, and other weapons. The treaty also barred German troops from the Rhineland and from uniting with Austria. However, Hitler invaded both.
  3. France and Great Britain did not want to go to war.
  4. The Soviets got two things from the treaty. First, it allowed them to avoid war - for the time being. It gave them time to strengthen their military forces. Second, it gave them control of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania.
  5. Hitler invaded Poland.

Vocabulary Terms

Blitzkrieg - the quick and forceful method of attack that Germany used in World War II; "lightning war"

Maginot line - a line of concrete forts built by France along its border with Germany

Arsenal - a place where a country stores or makes weapons

Destroyer - a small, fast warship that uses guns and other weapons to protect ships from submarines

Lend-Lease program - a program developed by Franklin Roosevelt that allowed Britain to borrow war supplies from the United States during World War II.

Defensive - protecting oneself rather than attacking others.

Guerilla warfare - a type of fighting that involves small attacks against an enemy or the things it needs and uses

Occupied Country - a country that the Axis powers took over and stayed in

D-day - The allied invasion of France in 1944

Kamikaze - A Japanese pilot who crashes his plane into an enemy ship and destroyed it and himself.

V-E Day - the day the allies completed their victory in Europe: May 8, 1945; stands for "Victory in Europe Day.

Atomic bomb - a bomb that uses unclear energy and has much destructive power.

Nuclear - having to do with atoms or energy from atoms.

V-J Day - the day the Allies completed their victory in Japan; September 2, 1945; stands for "Victory in Japan Day"
